At 51, Captain Gardner G Abash is leaving the media stage as one of the famous, popular, and very influential media personalities.

Quite successful and impactful, having touched millions of East Africans and nurtured a number of big Tanzanian talents.

For long, he stood as one of the most paid radio presenters in the country.

He remains a legend even after his demise. His relaxed but commanding voice was so remarkable, and was in deed a unique signature that distinguishes Garder from every other radio voice.

His listeners will forever miss a tricky, creative, and very confident voice projecting from a natural-born bold presenter.

He was a passionate brand ambassador. He did the most incredible jingles and adverts.

Being the captain of Jahazi, Gardner sailed through all kind of waters; he navigated his ‘Jahazi’ through tubulances, when he lost his colleague Ephraim Kibonde, and when the ‘Jahazi’ itself was banned by authorities in those ‘dark days’ of media censorship, until the current regime came with positive approach. The revival of ‘Jahazi’ found Gardner stronger, more tactical, and engaging in his manoeuvres with the mic.

I was lucky to have had a 2 hours Jahazi program interview with Gardner along his very vibrant colleagues, George Bantu and Mussa Hussein. As a lead, Captain asked very relevant questions, and you could lucidly tell that this experienced radio maestro mastered his business.

At a personal level, Captain is a brother and friend. We always shared a table at triple 7 after our working hours, and on weekends, and relocated to Mzinga Lounge (after triple 7 is closed). It was always fun to have Gardner on the table, with his humble welcoming, salutations, and stories.
I am glad to have celebrated his last birthday with him on the 17th of March this year in Mzinga.

At a professional level, Gardner is my client, and he has pending claims against corporations that we have started legal actions against (I will share details with his family).

Rest well, Captain Gardner G. Abash, you remain the best!
