Nigerian singer-songwriter David Adeleke, also known as Davido, has shared the story behind his stage name.
In a recent interview with Business Untitled, Davido disclosed that it was his father, billionaire businessman Mr. Adeleke, who gave him the name.
While Davido’s father was initially hesitant about his son’s music career, he has since become supportive and hopes for Davido’s success.
Davido, who rose to musical fame at 17, shared that his family has no prior experience in the entertainment industry, which initially hindered his father’s acceptance of his career choice.
Despite this, Davido praises his father as a supportive figure, even to the point of helping him select music for his albums. His father reportedly gave him the name “Davido” after seeing him perform on television.
Although Davido’s father initially insisted he complete his education, the singer eventually enrolled at Babcock University in 2011 to fulfill his father’s wishes.
Davido doesn’t believe his father is overly strict, recalling that he achieved recognition at a young age, despite his father’s efforts to reach him.
“I’m the first person in my family to pursue entertainment as a career,” Davido explained. “My father didn’t necessarily discourage me from music, but he wanted me to focus on achieving success overall.”
“After I returned to Nigeria, I kept my musical pursuits a secret from him. But when he heard my voice on the radio announcing my stage name, ‘Davido,’ he was supportive. He ultimately encouraged me to complete my education, which I did.”
