One of the reasons for Mauricio Pochettino’s dismissal was his skepticism about the midfield pairing of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, report Liam Twomey, Simon Johnson and other writers of The New York Times.
Chelsea insist Pochettino was willing to sign Caicedo for £115m and “never raised any doubts” about Caicedo or Enzo. However, in the end, the head coach began to doubt their quality.
Poch even felt that the two midfielders “lack the size and power for the Premier League.” He said Enzo was not good enough as a No. 6 or No. 4, 6 or 8 while Caicedo “lacked the positional discipline” to perform well as a holding midfielder.
Pochettino liked midfielder Conor Gallagher the most and insisted that the Englishman remain at the club beyond this season.
In total, Chelsea spent £221m on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez combined.
