On the afternoon of Wednesday June 12, 2024, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana, received a missing persons report from a concerned father, as his two young daughters and their mother was no where to found. Initially, it was believed the mother and her boyfriend had taken the kids somewhere, without telling anyone where or why they were going. This prompted the TPSO to issue a multi-state amber alert, in the hopes that the mother and her two daughters would be found safe and well.
However, by Thursday afternoon, these hopes soon faded as the mother, 35-year-old Callie Brunett, was found savagely murdered in her bedroom. No one had thought to check the property where Callie and her daughters lived, as the car was missing. But by Thursday afternoon, Callie’s father went inside the family home and discovered his daughter dead in her bedroom. According to the Sheriff of Tangipahoa Parish, Jimmy Travis, there was blood everywhere.
It quickly became apparent that the two young girls, 4-year-old Erin and her 6-year-old sister Jalie, were nowhere to be found. This then led law enforcement to suspect that Callie’s ex-boyfriend, 36-year-old Daniel Callihan, had taken them somewhere. In the initial amber alert, Callihan was named as a person of interest. Just over 24 hours after Callie’s body was discovered, Callihan and the two missing girls were located some 130 miles away, in a wooded area close to Jackson Mississippi.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they quickly apprehended Callihan, but sadly 4-year-old Erin was found dead. Within minutes of searching the scene, though, 6-year-old Jalie was found alive. Jalie was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of some minor wounds. Within a few hours of being transferred to the hospital, Jalie was reunited with her grandparents.
After being arrested, Callihan confessed to murdering Callie and Erin, and claimed it was due to the side effects of medication he was taking. While speaking to the media, as he was being taken from the Jackson courthouse to a waiting police cruiser, he told the media that he was guilty of murdering the mother and daughter. He also claimed that he had spent time in a hospital getting treatment for mental health issues.
Law enforcement has confirmed that the area where Callihan was found, seems to be used by human traffickers. A second person, 32-year-old Victoria Cox was also arrested in connection with the murders and abduction of the children.
