Chelsea Football Club may abandon the idea of a costly transfer for the striker despite being close to a deal for Aston Villa’s John Durand.
The 20-year-old Colombian arrived at Villa Park in January 2023 for £14.75m but has played little under Unai Emery. However, his brace from the bench in the 3-3 win against Liverpool provided a reminder of his potential.
However, according to The Telegraph, the deal is far from completed due to a change in Chelsea owner Todd Boehle’s transfer policy.
Since taking power, the American has spent more than £1 billion on transfers, many of which have failed. In addition, the club was criticized for the inflated salaries of newcomers.
In an effort to avoid sanctions for violating financial fair play, Boeli is being cautious with Duran. Chelsea are negotiating a personal contract and will conduct a thorough check on the player before signing.
In a departure from previous approaches, the Blues intend to offer Duran a “long-term contract with bonuses” to avoid demotivation and inflated wages should his form dip.
New head coach Enzo Mareschi is not expected to have the same financial options as his predecessors. His first signing was Fulham centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo, who was signed on a free transfer.
Chelsea are also being linked with another free agent, Mats Hummels. The 35-year-old leaves German side Borussia Dortmund and is seen as an experienced replacement for the departed Thiago Silva.
The sale of Durand is also beneficial for Villa, who are themselves struggling to comply with Financial Fair Play, despite qualifying for the Champions League.
Chelsea, on the other hand, will play in the Conference League, which in itself was a financial blow as UEFA rules limit the income allowed to be spent.
