The political future of Adan Bare Duale hangs in the balance after President William Ruto dismissed the entire cabinet, including Duale who was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Defence.
Duale was among three leaders who had resigned from their political seats to join Ruto’s cabinet after the August 2022 general election. However, Ruto has now fired them from their cabinet positions as part of a major government restructuring.
Duale was considered one of Ruto’s close allies, having faced repercussions during the Uhuru Kenyatta administration for his loyalty to Ruto when he was the Deputy President.
During Kenyatta’s tenure, Ruto was isolated from the government after the president declared his support for opposition leader Raila Odinga.
In his announcement Yesterday afternon ,President Ruto said he had decided to “dismiss with immediate effect all cabinet secretaries and Attorney General of the Cabinet of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs.”
Duale had a long political career, serving as the National Assembly Majority Leader for eight years until 2020 when he was ousted, with his position given to former Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya.
He was the first person to hold the Majority Leader seat after the 2010 constitution was promulgated.
Duale’s removal from the Majority Leader position was attributed to his perceived divided loyalty and inability to be trusted on the Jubilee Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) chaired by Kenyatta.
More than 130 MPs had petitioned for his ouster, accusing him of sabotaging the Jubilee agenda.
In his farewell speech on the floor of the House, Duale had promised to continue working with members, saying, “If any one of you wants my help, please do not hesitate to visit my office. I will make time for you, you will not wait…unless, of course, if you become too frequent and make it difficult for me to do my job.”
