  1. Seek professional advice.
It is always a good idea to seek professional advice from an accountant, professional business development consultant, or lawyer who can help guide you through the process of starting a business in Malawi. You can also simply research and study extensively on the Malawian business environment.
  2. Understand the market.
It is important to conduct research and understand the market you are entering, including the competition and the needs and preferences of your target customers.
  3. Have a financial plan.
Starting a business can be expensive, so it is important to have a clear understanding of your financial situation and projections for the future to make informed decisions about your business. Sometimes you can not finance your whole business by yourself, so seek external financing if possible such as grants, investments, and/or loans (if and only if the risk is well assessed). Financing is one of the major challenges faced by start-ups.
  4. Understand the legal requirements.
Before starting a business in your country, it’s important to understand the legal requirements for registering and operating a business in this country. This includes obtaining the necessary licenses and permits, as well as compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  5. Networking.
Building connections and relationships with other business owners, industry experts, and potential customers can be vital for success in Malawi. You can not be an island in business; the network you build will build you in turn.
  6. Age. Young or old you can succeed in business. The young say the older are better off because of wisdom and experience. The old think the young have more energy to run around.
  7. Marital status. The married think the singles have more time, the singles think the married have more support.
  8. Gender. Men think women can use their ‘charm’ to lure customers. Women think men have more tenacity to handle the hurdles of running an enterprise.
  9. Personality. The introverts think extroverts can network better thereby creating more connections for their business needs. Extroverts think the introverts’ ability to think deeply and ponder on issues combined with their natural ability to inspire trust makes them more likely to succeed.
  10. But you don’t have to look at different groups and wish you were more like them to succeed. For you can succeed right where you are with what you have. Make the best out of your situation, whatever it is.
