Kenyan government has officially submitted documentation to support Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position.

The delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, presented the required materials to the Dean of the Eastern Region, Dharmraj Busgeeth, and the Office of the Legal Counsel of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

According to Sing’oei, Odinga’s priorities as the AUC chairperson would focus on key areas such as African integration and infrastructure development, economic transformation, enhanced intra-African trade, financial independence, gender equity and equality, agricultural transformation, climate action, peace and security, and youth empowerment.

During the AU’s 22nd Extraordinary session of the Executive Council held in Addis Ababa on March 15, 2024, it was agreed that the election for senior leadership positions would take place in February 2025.

The Eastern region is responsible for submitting candidates for the role of Chairperson, while the Northern region will submit candidates for the Deputy Chairperson position.

The AU has set specific requirements for candidates seeking the Chairperson role, including the submission of a resume in the approved AU format and a short write-up outlining their vision for the position and how they intend to address the most pressing issues facing the AU and the continent.

This vision statement should not exceed one and a half pages and will be posted on a dedicated webpage on the AU website.

In support of Raila Odinga’s candidature, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has outlined a comprehensive campaign strategy.

This includes the establishment of a campaign secretariat by the State Department for Foreign Affairs, outreach programs to AU member states, and preparations for a public debate to be broadcast live to African citizens six months before the election date.
