It is just 10 days ago that we first heard of serious interest in the Villarreal goalkeeper. Since then, things have moved quickly: personal terms have been agreed, a transfer fee has been agreed with the club and late last night Fabrizio Romano announced that the goalkeeper will undergo a medical in the US today and will be ready to join the team as soon as possible. It has all happened so quickly that we may yet see the Denmark U21 international in our friendlies later this week.
One interesting detail that has emerged since the initial reports is the price. Most sources have been quoting a figure of €20 million, but Romano’s latest report says Villarreal will receive a package of €24.5 million.”
That’s quite a large sum – although the extra €4.5 million is believed to be made up of add-ons and bonuses that will only be awarded if Jorgensen performs well in our squad. In any case, it’s important that he starts training with the team as soon as possible.
“EXCLUSIVE: Filip Jorgensen joins Chelsea, Here We Go! Deal between clubs done and sealed.”
Chelsea will pay Villarreal €24.5m for the talented Danish goalkeeper, with a long-term deal also agreed.
“The deal was concluded between the agencies Goal Management and Epic Sports.”
“A new goalkeeper for Maresca.”
Bad track record – will it get worse?
We’d be lying if we said we were excited about Jorgensen – firstly, the reports from Spain aren’t all that great. They’re hardly gushing about his ability and potential. We’ve even seen Villarreal fans celebrating the fact that they’ve managed to get such a decent fee for him after just one season in the starting line-up.
Besides, these sporting directors have their own track record – as far as we know, they have already signed 0/3 good goalkeepers. Why should we be sure that they have not made a mistake in this matter?
However, given how poorly Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic have performed in the game, and given how new manager Enzo Maresca clearly wants to play, we can understand the move. Let’s hope it’s fourth time lucky for Winstanley/Stewart.
