The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into claims that officials from the office of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were involved in financing recent nationwide protests.

According to sources, the DCI has questioned seven officials from the DP’s office, including a former member of parliament serving as a political advisor, and a youth advisor.

Investigators suspect that at least 50 million Kenyan shillings were spent by the DP’s office to aid the protests, which led to the breach of the Kenyan Parliament and other key institutions.

Among those questioned were an official from Gachagua’s Karen office, the former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, who now works as a political advisor in the DP’s office, and former Embakasi West lawmaker Eric Theuri, who serves as the youth advisor. Munene wa Mumbi, the private secretary of the DP, also recorded a statement as part of the widened investigation.

The DCI’s Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) has also summoned allies of the deputy president, including lawmakers James Gakuya and Mejja Donk, who are suspected of being involved in the infiltration of “goons” during the recent “Gen-Z” protests.

The probe into the DP’s office comes amid claims of a possible impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga warned that any such attempt would be met with strong resistance from the mountain region.

“Where an impeachment motion is being considered against the deputy president, I want to make it very clear that that is an affront towards the mountain. It is an attack on us as a people, and we will not be taking it lying, but it has its consequences. Whoever feels that that is the way to go, we kindly tell them to bring it on,” said Kahiga.
