Enzo Maresca made it clear in a press conference on Wednesday that the former Manchester City star, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £47.5million deal in the summer of 2022, is no longer part of his plans.
The Italian’s comments come just days after Sterling’s representatives released a statement suggesting they were looking for clarity over their client’s future after he was left out of the matchday squad for the Blues’ opening fixture of the season.
A clear-the-air meeting has since taken place with Sterling now set to move on. The 29-year-old wants a permanent move, though, having been left out of Chelsea’s first team plans, rather than a loan exit.
Sterling was given time off this week, missing training on Tuesday and Wednesday, and joins a group of 20 players who do not train under Maresca day-to-day. The England international has lost his No.7 shirt to new Chelsea signing Pedro Neto.
Sterling is already said to have received interest from Juventus in addition to the Saudi Pro League. The winger is reluctant to move abroad after settling in London however and would like to resurrect his England career.
The ex-Liverpool star was informed last Friday he would not be involved against Manchester City. The situation has developed from there. Maresca explained: “I spoke with Raheem before the City game. I said he is going to struggle to get minutes with us and this is the reason why he is out of the squad.”
“I’m not saying Raheem is not a good player but I prefer different kinds of wingers. This is the reason why,” he added.
