England international wingers Sterling and Sancho are both out of favour at their respective clubs. Neither man has featured in the Premier League this season, though United star Sancho – thought to be of interest to Chelsea – had a brief run-out in the Community Shield.
Sterling sought clarity from Chelsea after being left out of their matchday squad for the opening weekend of the season against Manchester City. The forner City man saw his opportunities limited after a busy summer, with Pedro Neto among the additions to Chelsea’s squad under new manager Enzo Maresco, and Joao Felix has been added since that opening game.
Sancho spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund after a public falling-out with United boss Erik ten Hag. The pair appeared to patch up their differences during the close-season, but a suitable offer could still tempt Ten Hag to allow the player to leave.
According to The Telegraph, United’s sporting director Dan Ashworth has held talks with Chelsea representatives over a potential swap deal involving Sterling and Sancho. However, the Manchester club are said to only be prepared to sanction an exit for their player on their own terms.
“I spoke with Raheem, one-on-one the day before City and I explained him exactly the situation. I didn’t see Raheem after the game,” Chelsea boss Maresca said of the 29-year-old.
“In this moment, they (Sterling and Ben Chilwell) are training apart. The situation with them both is quite clear. There is not any update on their situations.”
Ten Hag was asked about Sancho before United’s defeat to Brighton in their second game of the new league season. “He’s here, but I have a choice to make,” he said.
“We had some issues, but we need a full squad. He’s one of them and he has to compete for his position and game to game we will have a look. But in the squad every position we need double because it’s going to be a long season.”
United are poised to make Manuel Ugarte their fifth summer signing. The Uruguay international, who will join from Paris Saint-Germain, follows Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt in moving to Old Trafford.
