President William Ruto has officially unveiled veteran politician Raila Odinga as the country’s candidate for the prestigious position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission.
During a ceremony held at State House, the Kenyan presidential residence, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua highlighted Odinga’s unwavering commitment to the Pan-African agenda.
“Raila Odinga’s candidacy is not just a mission for Kenya but a shared continental endeavor, driven by a vision of a prosperous and integrated Africa,” Gachagua stated.
The Deputy President further emphasized that under President Ruto’s leadership, Kenya is proudly presenting a candidate who embodies the ideals of transformative leadership.
“I am pleased to announce that the member states of the East African Community have unanimously endorsed Raila Odinga, affectionately known as Baba,” Gachagua added.
The event was graced by the presence of several regional leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Salva Kiir of South Sudan.
Former Presidents Jakaya Kikwete and Olusegun Obasanjo were also in attendance, alongside diplomats, ambassadors, and other distinguished guests.
Gachagua stressed the significance of this campaign launch, stating, “This is a call to unite behind a leader who will elevate the African Union on the global stage and work tirelessly for the advancement of our great continent. Let us rally together to support a future where Africa thrives in unity and progress.”
The endorsement of Raila Odinga’s candidacy by the Kenyan government and the East African Community member states is seen as a crucial step towards his bid for the AU Commission Chairpersonship.
This move aligns with the continent’s aspirations for transformative leadership and the realization of Agenda 2063, the African Union’s ambitious blueprint for a prosperous and integrated Africa.
