Italian football legend and former Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro has announced that he turned down the chance to lead Nigeria’s Super Eagles as their head coach.
The 50-year-old defender, renowned for his remarkable career, was among a select group of international coaches evaluated by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the esteemed managerial position.
The former defender for Juventus and Real Madrid has announced that he is actively seeking new opportunities with clubs throughout Europe and Italy, making it clear that he is not currently considering a move to Africa.
According to his statement which read; “I had offers from Nigeria [national team] and Iranian clubs, but I want to wait for Serie A and European clubs until December. After that, I may start travelling again,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
In a stunning display of defensive prowess, Fabio Cannavaro captained Italy to glory in the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany.
His remarkable performances on the field were instrumental in Italy achieving five clean sheets, with only two goals conceded both from set pieces, not in open play. For his exceptional contributions, Cannavaro was honored with the Silver Ball, recognizing him as the tournament’s second-best player.
Additionally, he made history by being named the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year, a prestigious accolade that distinguishes him as the only defender ever to receive this honor.
In a remarkable achievement, he clinched the prestigious Ballon d’Or award in 2006, becoming the sole defender to receive this honor in a decade and only the third in history, following legends Franz Beckenbauer and Matthias Sammer.
Recently, he successfully guided Udinese to safety in Serie A during the last season.
