The National Assembly is set to deliberate on the Joint Parliamentary Committee’s report regarding the nomination of Mr. Douglas Kanja Kirocho as Inspector-General of the National Police Service.
The discussion will take place during the morning sitting on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
In a communication to members, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, announced that the Senate has approved Mr. Kirocho for the position.
“I wish to report to the House that on August 21, 2024, I received a message from the Senate regarding the approval of a nominee for the position of Inspector-General of the National Police Service,” Wetang’ula stated.
The Senate’s resolution, passed on August 20, 2024, endorsed Mr. Kirocho’s appointment after a comprehensive vetting process conducted by a joint sitting of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations.
“This vetting exercise was conducted in accordance with Article 245(2)(a) of the Constitution,” the Speaker noted.
With the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security expected to present the Joint Report later today, Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of this appointment for the National Police Service.
“Our security framework relies on strong leadership, and I believe Mr. Kirocho will bring the necessary expertise and vision to the role,” he added.
As the House Business Committee prepares for tomorrow’s debate, members are urged to engage constructively in discussions that will ultimately shape the leadership of the National Police Service.
