Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja officially took the oath of office on Thursday at the Supreme Court buildings, marking the start of his tenure as the fifth IG of police under the 2010 Constitution.

Kanja succeeds Japhet Koome, who resigned in July following significant protests from Gen Z over the Finance Act 2024.

He was accompanied by family members during the swearing-in ceremony, which was overseen by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

His appointment came shortly after President William Ruto named him to the position, with the National Assembly granting approval on Wednesday.

Kanja had previously received the Senate’s endorsement after a vetting process.

“I William Ruto appoint Douglas Kanja Kirocho to be the Inspector General of the National Police Service for a term of 4 years,” reads a gazette notice

Before this role, Kanja served as the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police.
