Security personnel in Garissa achieved a significant milestone in addressing rampant insecurity on Saturday with the apprehension of two suspected criminals.
The suspects were detained in Bula Burburis, located in the Galbet ward on the outskirts of Garissa town, following a public tip-off.
During a press briefing in the Burburis area, Garissa subcounty police commander Samwel Boit announced the arrests, which also included a third individual accused of harboring the suspects.
Boit, accompanied by Garissa deputy county commissioner Thomas Bett, reported the recovery of an AK-47 rifle with six rounds of ammunition, as well as two safes believed to have been stolen from a local bank.
Additionally, a white motor vehicle found on the premises is suspected to be linked to the gang’s activities.
“We are pleased to announce that today we made a significant breakthrough in combating the criminals and gangs that have been instilling fear and insecurity in Bula Madina, Bula Burburis, and surrounding areas,” Boit stated.
He explained that the operation was initiated based on intelligence received, leading to the formation of a special task force comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service, Administration Police, and DCI personnel.
The suspects will be processed and brought to court once investigations are concluded.
Boit expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation, urging continued collaboration in the fight against crime while assuring that all information provided would be handled confidentially.
“I also want to commend my fellow officers for their well-coordinated efforts. They made sacrifices, and we are now seeing positive results. We have also stepped up patrols and intelligence gathering,” he added.
Deputy county commissioner Thomas Bett praised the collaboration between security forces and the public that led to the arrests.
He confirmed that operations would continue and expand to all settlements in Garissa, acknowledging the ongoing threat posed by a larger criminal gang.
“I can assure you that we will pursue these criminals relentlessly until we have apprehended all of them. We will not rest until Garissa town and its surroundings are safe and secure for everyone,” he affirmed.
