Nearly two weeks after the mysterious abduction of Wajir MCA Yusuf Hussein Abdi in Nairobi, his family and community members are urging the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to employ every resource at his disposal to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident
The Della Ward MCA was reportedly taken by armed assailants on the night of September 13 while traveling home to Pangani from South C, raising urgent concerns about public safety.
“Up to now there is no clue of his whereabouts; we want justice for the abducted MCA,” said Adan Issack, a local resident.
Community members are also appealing to the President to fulfill his commitment to end abductions and extrajudicial killings.
“We are tired of harassment, extrajudicial killings, and mysterious abductions no one can say how it happened. We are governed by the rule of law; if the person has made a mistake, he should be taken to court within 24 hours. If he is guilty, he will be sentenced; if not guilty, he will be freed,” Issack emphasized.
He called on MCAs from the 47 County Assemblies to unite in support of their fellow legislator, highlighting the potential for similar incidents to affect anyone.
“Our honorable colleagues from other county assemblies, kindly show solidarity with your colleague. Let’s ask the government where they have taken this guy,” he stated.
Sheikh Hassan Omar, Treasurer of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), insisted that the MCA should be brought before the court if he is in custody.
“His kids and kin and the electorates don’t know where Yusuf Hussein is. We want to know where he is and if he is alive or dead,” Omar said.
Abdi Ibrahim expressed his dismay over the MCA’s abduction, calling for adherence to the law.
“If our brother has made a mistake or has questions to answer, the State can produce him in a Court of Law. The state has a right to arrest anyone, at any time, anywhere, but the question arises when the person has been abducted; it is not known who abducted him,” Ibrahim noted.
He warned of an alarming trend in abductions that needs to be addressed.
“If an elected MP can be abducted, what of the ordinary citizen? If the State is not aware of his abduction, how safe are we? We are asking the State to take action; in less than 24 hours, we need to know the whereabouts of our brother,” Ibrahim demanded.
Jamila Ibrahim called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to determine the identity of those responsible for the abduction.
“It is disheartening that we don’t know the whereabouts of our son. We want the government to intervene,” Jamila Ibrahim said.
