  • Fenerbahce drop Puma for Adidas after Galatasary-fuelled dispute
…The new deal with Adidas is worth $10.5 million over five years

Fenerbahce are swapping Puma for a five-year deal with Adidas after a dispute with Puma who had opted to prioritise their deal with Galatasary in the Turkish market.

While Fenerbahce have gained the reputation of being able to start an argument in a room on their own, the refusal to play second-fiddle to Puma’s focus on Galatasary is understandable and certainly would not have been accepted by the club’s fans.

The new deal with Adidas is reportedly for $10.5 million over five years with the club also receiving a 65% share of revenue from kit sales. Adidas will design exclusive kit for Fenerbahce unlike Puma who were only offering catalogue-based designs.

Adidas will also pay €2.5 – €4 million a year for the rights to the club’s amateur sports teams.

Fenerbahce had initially signed a two-year extension with Puma in March but a dispute arose over the five stars on the Fenerbahce logo, with each star signifying five championship wins. Galatasary fans objected over the five-star logo and the shirts were removed from stores.

The Turkish Football Federation does not recognise championships before establishment of the Turkish Football League in 1959. Officially they recognise 19 Fenerbahce titles, but the club claims a total of 28 championships, including nine titles won before 1959. Galatasaray has won 24 championship titles since 1959.

The cancellation of the agreement between Puma and Fenerbache was mutually agreed.
