The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following a recommendation from its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.
In a meeting held in Abuja on January 2, 2025, the committee proposed Chelle, a former coach of the Mali national team, for the prestigious role. This recommendation received the green light from the NFF Executive Committee just days later, on January 7.
Chelle, who has represented Mali five times on the international stage, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Super Eagles, having managed clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.
Since taking charge of the Aiglons in 2022, he has demonstrated his tactical acumen, notably leading Mali to a near semi-final finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they were edged out by the hosts in a gripping 2-1 extra-time defeat.
At 47, Chelle’s playing career spanned several French clubs, including Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. His immediate challenge will be to guide the Super Eagles through the upcoming qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with crucial matches set for March.
