The government of Lagos State has initiated an inquiry following the emergence of a viral video that claims Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, assaulted a public official.
Tensions flared recently as the commissioner engaged in a passionate dispute with Qudus Onikeku, the proprietor of the firm overseeing the J.K. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.
Eyewitnesses reported a confrontation that captured the attention of onlookers, raising questions about the underlying issues at play.
In response to the uproar, the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture released a statement addressing the viral video that has taken social media by storm.
The ministry emphasized the importance of clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to provide a comprehensive account of the events that unfolded at the cultural center.
The Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, is tasked with the crucial role of overseeing all facilities managed by the Ministry. In fulfilling this duty, she recently conducted an inspection at the J.K. Randle Centre to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
During her visit, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka uncovered that the Centre Director, Qudus Onikeku, was operating an unauthorized canteen on the premises without the Ministry’s consent.
This revelation led her to challenge the legitimacy of the operation, resulting in an eviction order that was met with fierce resistance from Onikeku and his team, who reportedly assaulted Ministry officials in the process.
