Well-known Nigerian musician Darlington Achakpo, better known as Speed Darlington, has recently gone through legal challenges that led to his arraignment and eventual release on bail.
His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed that the court granted the bail request during a hearing on Wednesday, following formal charges brought against the artist by the police.
The Federal High Court in Abuja set Speed Darlington’s bail at N20 million, as stated by Justice Ekerete Akpan. This ruling came after the artist pleaded not guilty to two charges related to alleged cybercrime, with his attorney, Marshall Abubakar, pushing for his release.
The judge has stipulated that the surety, required to be a Level 10 civil servant, must reside in Abuja and furnish an affidavit demonstrating financial capability.
Additionally, the court has ordered Speed Darlington to hand over his international passport, while both the surety and the defendant are to provide two recent passport-sized photographs to the court registrar.
In a recent court ruling, the judge has decided that Speed Darlington will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until he fulfills the conditions set for his bail. This decision underscores the legal proceedings surrounding the case, which have garnered significant public attention.
Commenting on the situation, Adeyanju wrote; “Police finally arraigns Speed Darlington in court. Bail application moved and granted. We are trying to perfect same.”
Speed Darlington found himself in legal trouble in October 2024 when he was taken into custody on charges of defamation and cyberstalking against fellow artist Burna Boy.
The controversial singer was arrested in Lagos and subsequently moved to Abuja, where he was detained by the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector General of Police in the Guzape area.
After being released from police detention, Speed Darlington faced another arrest in November while he was on stage performing in Owerri, Imo State, just days after returning to Nigeria.
This series of events unfolded amid a public feud with Burna Boy, drawing attention from socialite Pascal Okechkwu, known as Cubana Chief Priest, who vowed to assist in securing Speed Darlington’s release from incarceration.
