Mubarak Wakaso’s anticipated move to Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak has collapsed after initial talks failed to progress as the second registration window closes on Wednesday night.
The experienced midfielder, who has been a free agent since January 2024 following his stint with Chinese club Shenzhen FC, was reportedly in advanced discussions with the Phobians for a January transfer.
However, despite early optimism, negotiations facilitated by intermediaries could not reach a final agreement, according to 3Sports.
Wakaso, 34, has not played a competitive match since August 23, 2023, due to recurring knee injuries.
He has been training in Ghana recently, and Hearts of Oak hoped to manage his workload carefully, similar to the approach they took with Sulley Muntari during the 2022/23 season.
The club had planned to limit Wakaso’s appearances to select high-profile matches, avoiding long trips to ensure his fitness.
Wakaso, with a career that includes stints at Villarreal, Panathinaikos, Espanyol, and Rubin Kazan, was expected to bring invaluable experience to the team.
With 70 caps and 13 goals for Ghana, including winning the Golden Boot at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, his leadership could have been key to Hearts’ push for a stronger finish in the Ghana Premier League.
