Governor of Sokoto State vehemently denied allegations suggesting his intention to remove the esteemed Sultan of Sokoto from his position.

In a recent development, Governor Aliyu Sokoto of Sokoto state has categorically refuted the allegations made by MURIC regarding a supposed plot to depose His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

The Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, had expressed concerns on Monday, highlighting the state government’s alleged intentions in light of the recent events in Kano.

MURIC’s statement pointed out the removal of 15 traditional rulers on grounds of various offenses.

However, Governor Aliyu Sokoto has firmly denied any involvement in such a plot, emphasizing that the allegations are baseless and unfounded.

Prof Akintola emphasized that the Muslim community in Nigeria stands united in their unwavering support for the Sultan, who holds a significant role as the spiritual leader of all Muslims in the country.

Furthermore, the Islamic group raised apprehensions regarding the reported strained relations between the state authorities and the Sultan.

They underscored the Sultan of Sokoto’s pivotal position, highlighting that he not only embodies tradition but also serves as the leader of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

The group cautioned the governor of Sokoto against compelling Nigerian Muslims to resort to extreme measures.

According to reports, there are rumors circulating that the governor might target the Sultan of Sokoto soon, using similar excuses as those used to depose the 15 traditional rulers earlier.

MURIC is urging the governor to carefully consider his actions before taking any drastic steps. The Sultan’s position is not just a traditional one, but also holds religious significance.

Additionally, his authority extends beyond Sokoto to encompass the entire nation of Nigeria.

He assumes the role of the spiritual guide for all Muslims in Nigeria.
