The young people known as Generation Z (Gen Z) in Kenya have successfully compelled President William Ruto to dissolve his cabinet.

Despite initially dismissing them as “leaderless and partyless,” the well-organized Gen Z protesters held widespread demonstrations across the country, demanding sweeping reforms from the government.

The Gen Z-led protests initially began as a rejection of the Finance Bill 2024, which would have imposed heavier taxes on Kenyans.

However, their demands quickly expanded to include greater accountability and integrity in the government.

Key demands from the Gen Z protesters included:

• Obedience to all court orders and scrapping of the Chief Administrative Secretary position
• Removal of public funding for the Office of the First Lady, Second Lady, and Prime Cabinet Secretary’s Spouse
• Immediate dismissal of government officials with criminal records and integrity issues
• Timely constitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)
• Employment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and intern doctors
• Reduction of Members of Parliament’s salaries and allowances
• Restoration of the school feeding program
• Requirement for government officials to use only government vehicles, trains, and planes

After weeks of sustained protests, President Ruto announced on Wednesday that he had decided to undertake a “holistic reflection” of his cabinet’s performance.

On Thursday, afternoon during his address to the nation he subsequently dissolved the entire cabinet, stating that the move would not disrupt government service delivery.

The Gen Z protesters have emerged as a formidable force, successfully pressuring the president to concede to their demands.

Their victory showcases the growing political clout of Kenya’s young population, who have demonstrated their ability to hold the government accountable and drive significant policy changes.
