President William Ruto has called on the National Police Service to utilize its powers responsibly and in accordance with the constitution.

During a press briefing at State House, Ruto emphasized that any breaches or violations by police officers must be addressed expeditiously through due process, in order to ensure Kenyans have a police force that upholds the highest standards of integrity.

“I call on the National Police Service to use its mandate responsibly, professionally and effectively, in full compliance with the constitution, with a view to promoting the national objectives outlined in Articles 238, 239 and 244 of our Constitution,” the President stated.

The government had previously expressed regret that the initially peaceful demonstrations had been infiltrated by criminal elements, resulting in the loss of property and lives.

Authorities have stated that security agencies have been instructed to exercise restraint when facing peaceful protests, but warned that the use of force will be employed to address any criminality and ensure public safety.

Police have faced criticism for their response to the protests, with reports of the use of live ammunition and tear gas to disperse crowds of demonstrators.

The protests have been marked by scenes of violence, as youths have engaged in running battles with security forces across the country.

President Ruto’s call for the police to uphold their constitutional mandate and exercise restraint reflects the delicate balance the government is seeking to strike between maintaining public order and respecting the rights of citizens to peacefully protest.
