Acting Police Inspector General (IG) Gilbert Masengeli has emphasized the National Police Service’s (NPS) preparedness to maintain peace across Kenya as Gen Z protesters plan another round of anti-government demonstrations on Thursday, labeled ‘#NaneNanematch’.
Speaking at the Embakasi Administration Police Training College (APTC) on Tuesday after discussions with regional police chiefs, Masengeli indicated that security will be heightened nationwide, though not to an extraordinary extent.
According to sources who spoke to Arabia Media Network, the talks also focused on the operational and logistical challenges facing officers in their jurisdictions and how to address them to ensure efficiency within the NPS.
Masengeli, however, urged Kenyans intending to participate in the protests to do so in compliance with the law.
“Every Kenyan, as per the law, has the liberty to demonstrate, picket and assemble. Where the privilege of the rights of one ends, is where the other starts. We are all Kenyans and we have to abide by the rule of law. This is a country governed by democracy and the constitution,” said the Acting Police IG.
The meeting also provided Masengeli with the opportunity to interact for the first time with his ground commanders as he seeks to affirm his brief tenure at the helm of the Service before a substantive IG of police is appointed.
Masengeli is also the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the Administration Police Service following his appointment two weeks ago.
