Members of Parliament (MPs) convened on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to schedule a critical meeting with Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, addressing recent developments that arose during their recess.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, announced that CS Migos is set to appear before the House on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, for questioning.

In the wake of the Endarasha Hillside Academy fire that claimed the lives of 21 students, MPs are pressing the Education CS for a comprehensive account of the incident’s cause.

In addition to providing explanations, CS Migos is expected to outline the measures the Ministry of Education is implementing to enhance student safety in schools.

“The House must be fully apprised of the cause of this tragic incident and the remedial measures proposed by the Ministry,” stated Speaker Wetang’ula.

He also extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

The summons comes as school owner, David Kinyua, announced plans for resuming activities.

He informed the press that the administration intends to reduce the number of boarding students and has organized a forum for parents and stakeholders to discuss the school’s reopening plans following the fire.

Kinyua further mentioned that the school would relocate the dormitory that was destroyed, aiming to alleviate students’ trauma.

“Tulikuwa tumeruhusiwa tuanze on Saturday lakini tunajaribu ili tumeet the time ya hawa watoto. Tumetoa dorm mahali ilikuwa inafanywa pia tunataka kuipeleka mahali engine. Pia tumeondoa ata njia ile watoto watakuwa wanapitia, especially boys, so that hawatakuwa na shida na trauma. (We were allowed to commence on Saturday, and we are trying to meet the timelines. We have moved the dorm to another place, and we have also removed the walking path, especially for boys, so that they will not have issues with trauma),” Kinyua explained.

In addition to addressing the fire tragedy, Wetang’ula announced that CS Migos will respond to questions raised during the Member’s Kamakunji held on August 20, 2024, regarding the new university funding model.

According to a communiqué from Parliament, CS Migos will also provide estimates of the total cost of education from basic to tertiary levels and details on annual allocations for education bursaries and scholarships.

Despite President William Ruto forming a team to review the funding model, MPs are seeking answers from the CS regarding earlier concerns.

“The Cabinet Secretary will be expected to provide a comprehensive report on the progress made in implementing the New Funding Model, as well as measures taken to simplify the model and enlighten the public,” Speaker Wetang’ula stated.
