A recent report from the National Assembly indicates that the proposed impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faced significant opposition from residents across the Mt. Kenya region.

This public sentiment was gathered during a nationwide participation exercise conducted on October 4 and 5, 2024.

The findings reveal a stark rejection of the impeachment motion, particularly in Gachagua’s home county of Nyeri.

On October 8, the National Assembly moved forward with the impeachment, with 282 MPs voting in favor, 44 against, and one abstention.

Among the constituencies in Nyeri, Mukurweini stood out with an overwhelming 97.42% of participants expressing disapproval of the motion.

DP Gachagua, who represented Mathira in Parliament from 2017 to 2022, also saw 96.97% of his former constituents voting against his ouster.

Other notable areas in Nyeri showing high levels of disapproval included Nyeri Town (96.93%), Kieni (91.77%), Tetu (87.37%), and Othaya (86.54%).

Support for Gachagua extended beyond Nyeri, with Nakuru County also showing significant backing, particularly in Subukia (97.16%) and Naivasha (94.94%).

Murang’a County echoed this sentiment, as residents in Kigumo (95.40%), Kangema (95.36%), and Kandara (91.38%) largely opposed the motion.

The report also highlighted resistance in several Nairobi constituencies, including Embakasi Central (79.81%) and Embakasi North (81.28%).

In Kiambu County, Thika Town (78.86%) and Githunguri (77.67%) reflected similar trends of opposition.

In the Eastern region, Kitui Rural Constituency led with 93.36% of participants against the impeachment motion.
