Africa is set for a heavy representation in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States and FIFA president is confident African football is on the rise and players will make big splashes in the continental competitions.

Four African clubs, Wydad – Morocco, Al Ahly – Egypt, Esperance -Tunisia, and Mamelodi Sundowns – South Africa, will compete in the first-ever expanded tournament while 147 African players will feature across 16 clubs from five continents, representing 22 African countries.
“We are making sure that Africans can have a bigger say on the world scene,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino declared at the CAF extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo.
In the next 2026 FIFA World Cup, Africa could see its representation double to up to 10 teams. The Women’s World Cup and the U17 World Cup are also opening more doors for African talent on the global stage.
“For the Women’s World Cup, we moved from 3 to 4 or potentially 6 representatives from Africa and the same goes, of course, for the youth competitions”, added Infantino.
Wydad has been drawn into a challenging Group G, which includes European heavyweights Manchester City, Juventus, and UAE’s Al Ain. The expanded 32-team competition will run from June 14 to July 13.
During the same assembly, Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), was re-elected as a member of the FIFA council.
The vote took place during the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) general assembly in Cairo, Egypt, where Lekjaa secured 49 out of 52 votes.
At the same time, South African business tycoon Patrice Motsepe was re-elected as CAF President for a second term without any contender.
