The Department of State Services (DSS), has issued a stern warning to the public planning to stage protests regarding Democracy Day.

This day, significant in Nigeria’s history for marking the country’s transition to democratic governance, is often observed through public gatherings and demonstrations.

However, amidst concerns of potential unrest, the DSS has taken a proactive stance in cautioning citizens and organizations against participating in protests that might devolve into violence or disrupt the public order

The DSS (Department of State Services) has received information about plans to trigger violence and disorder during protests.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, stated that the agency is committed to preserving safety and national security. Citizens are urged to reject any attempts to involve them in unlawful activities.

“The DSS recommends that people and groups who are unhappy should follow official channels and protocols to voice their grievances. The agency has been informed about potential protests scheduled on June 12, 2024, that have potentially dangerous goals, and these protests are scheduled to take place during the Democracy Day celebration.

“While acknowledging that citizens have the right to assemble and express their opinions, the DSS emphasizes that these rights should not be abused to jeopardize public safety or national security. Authorities will not tolerate the use of protests by certain non-governmental groups as a means to stir widespread discontent and potentially fuel violence.

“He further emphasizes that Citizens are responsible for maintaining order and the rule of law. They should not participate in unlawful actions that could disrupt the nation’s peace. Instead, those who are unhappy should use established channels and procedures to express their concerns.

“On the 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democracy, the Secret Service commends both the government and citizens for their efforts. The Service encourages continued patriotism, unity, and unwavering dedication in working together to build the Nigeria we envision.

“The security service will continue to work closely with all concerned parties, including other security agencies, to preserve peace and safeguard the lives and possessions of citizens throughout the country. Upright citizens are encouraged to engage in their daily activities without apprehension.”
