Fernandes has starred for the Red Devils ever since his arrival in January 2021 and was named captain by Erik ten Hag at the start of last season. But it turned out to be a miserable campaign for Ten Hag’s side.

New controlling co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ordered an overhaul throughout the club, with Fernandes not one of the players who was marked out as being off-limits for interested suitors this summer.

PSG appear increasingly likely to test out United’s stance on keeping hold of their skipper. And just two months ago, Fernandes set out what the Red Devils need to do to ensure he remains at Old Trafford.

“The club needs to want me,” Fernandes said in May. “I feel the club wants me to be a part of the future. As I said always, I don’t want to be a player that the club doesn’t want to have. If for some reason they don’t want to have me, I will go. But if they want me, I will stay.‌

“I am no different from anyone just because I have the armband. I always try my best and we always do the best we can for the club – nobody hides that we play for a big club and we have to lift our standards every game.”

Fernandes’ comments will be ringing in United’s ears as they brace themselves to receive a bid from PSG. According to L’Equipe, the French giants ‘really appreciate’ Fernandes’ talents as they seek to replace Kylian Mbappe.

The midfielder has previously been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, though expected interest from Al-Nassr has not come to pass. Now, PSG boss Luis Enrique has given his backing to a sensational move.

Talks are expected to intensify between the two clubs over the future of the Portuguese international. United boss Ten Hag has been adamant that he wants his captain to remain at Old Trafford.

“No, absolutely, the club wants to keep Bruno,” Ten Hag said immediately after Fernandes’ interview, which came following United’s final home game of last season.

‌”I have to see the interview, maybe it’s your interpretation, but from everything I know from him he loves Manchester United, the fans of United and to play for United. He always gives his best and is an example, even with injuries.

“He loves football and wants to win. That is how I would describe his character. I’m very pleased with his performances. It’s not easy when so many players are injured around him and he has to carry the team
