In a recent statement, ODM leader Raila Odinga has distanced himself from the involvement in the selection of four party members who were included in President William Ruto’s new-look Cabinet.

While wishing the ODM Cabinet nominees well, Odinga clarified that their inclusion is not the result of a coalition agreement between ODM and the ruling UDA party.

Odinga stated that ODM had anticipated the crafting of clear terms of engagement based on issues they had previously outlined in various communiqués.

These include the compensation of families of victims of extra-judicial killings, the release of all protesters who are still in custody, and the prosecution of police officers found culpable for shooting and killing or injuring protesters.

Odinga reiterated that these demands align with ODM’s principles of upholding democracy, good governance, and social justice.

He urged all stakeholders to remain committed to the ideals of unity and progress for the prosperity of all Kenyans.

Shortly before unveiling the second batch of ministerial nominees, President Ruto ordered all security agencies to release wrongfully arrested protesters and terminate cases against them.

This suggests that Raila’s ODM is still awaiting action on their demand for families to be compensated and the prosecution of officers found culpable for injuring or killing protesters.

The National Assembly has released a schedule for the vetting of the Cabinet nominees, which will be conducted over four days, starting from Thursday, August 1, 2024, through to Sunday, August 4, 2024.
